The Beginning

From the modest beginning in 2008 as the collaborative “brainchild” of Ray Lenarcic, special projects chair for the Herkimer Elks, the Polish Home of Herkimer and the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post in Mohawk, this project has grown and “taken wings.”

Tirelessly promoted by the committee, the project started with one mural which was joined by another earlier this year.  Both murals were designed by Bob Critser, CAD Designs, Herkimer, NY.

The object of the Fallen Stars Memorial Tribute was to honor and remember each service member from New York State who has made the ultimate sacrifice in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.  Each one could be honored by a community service project or donation to the Fallen Stars that would go to support the McKenna-Glover Foundation and the annual Vets Expo.

 The original committee consisted of:

Ray Lenarcic- Professor Emeritus of History (HCCC).  Ray is committed to helping the needy and underserved in    Herkimer County.    He is the founder of the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition as well as the Special Projects Chairman for the Herkimer Lions Club.

Elmer Heston- Vice Commander of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25, Mohawk, NY.

Paul Scanlon- Vietnam Combat Veteran. Treasurer of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25.

Vince Casale- Representing Herkimer County Community  College (HCCC), Herkimer, NY.

Kelly Brown- Emergency Services Director, Mohawk Valley Red Cross. Chairman of the Herkimer Polish Home Board of Directors.
