* Introducing the Mural

 May 26, 2008, Herkimer County Community College

 Memorial Day is a day to remember our veterans- those no longer with us as well as those still  
 serving.

 This day was chosen to unveil the Fallen Stars Tribute mural to the community.  There were several speakers, including Mimi Martin. Mimi’s husband, Sgt. Shawn Martin, USMC, had been killed in Iraq nearly a year earlier on June 20, 2007. Mimi was asked to speak as a Gold Star wife.  Ray Lenarcic explained the concept of the mural and the meaning of the stars. As each spoke, the meaning of the project was made clear to the audience.  When Mimi spoke she made the observation that for her “everyday is Memorial Day” and what she asked of the public was to think also of the families of the fallen because they have also made a sacrifice.

Several days after the Memorial Day ceremony, Mimi was asked by the committee to be the spokesperson.
She accepted and saw this opportunity as a way to honor Shawn.
